READ YOUR BILL

Understand the charges on your electricity bill

Separate energy charges, fixed charges, adjustments, taxes and earlier balances without mistaking an estimate for the payable bill.

Read the total in layers

Multiplying units by an energy rate is only one part of a bill. The final amount can include fixed charges, adjustments for another period, taxes or fees, a previous balance and credits. Read the line labels and signs before deciding which part changed.

LayerWhat to look forA useful question
EnergykWh, category and energy-charge linesAre the units and category the ones on this connection?
Fixed chargesApproved load or demand basisWhich load and category produced this charge?
AdjustmentsFPA/FCA, QTA or other adjustment labelsWhat consumption period and notification does this cover?
Taxes and feesThe specific tax/duty/fee labelsWhat rate and taxable basis apply to this account?
Previous balance / creditArrears, corrections and creditsIs an earlier payment or correction included?

FPA/FCA and QTA are adjustment labels, not interchangeable names for every tax. A negative adjustment reduces the relevant total. An arrear can relate to an older bill rather than the new meter reading.

Find the source values first

Original educational diagram by PakistanBillCheck. Field positions vary by provider and bill version; it is not a bill or a payment document.

The exact printed layout can change. If a total is grouped on the current bill, request the underlying breakdown from the provider instead of guessing an individual tax value.

Work through an illustrative reconciliation

Suppose a fictional statement has the following printed amounts. This is an addition exercise only: the numbers are not current tax rates or an actual utility bill.

Invented amounts, not a payable bill
Illustrative lineAmount
Energy chargesRs. 5,000
Fixed chargesRs. 600
Positive adjustmentRs. 200
Taxes and fees as printedRs. 900
Earlier balanceRs. 300
Credit− Rs. 100
Illustrative totalRs. 6,900

Adding 5,000 + 600 + 200 + 900 + 300 − 100 gives 6,900. If the printed total differs, look for another line, rounding or a different due-date column. This method checks arithmetic; it does not verify that a tax is legally applicable.

Why this guide avoids one universal tax percentage

Taxes and duties can depend on the account category, the billing period and the relevant federal or provincial rules. A percentage without its taxable basis is incomplete. A statement such as “taxes are always 40% of your bill” can mislead even when it happens to resemble one household’s bill.

For a disputed tax line, ask the provider to identify its name, rate, taxable amount, period and applicable notification. For an adjustment, use NEPRA’s tariff register to find the relevant decision. The February base-tariff notification alone does not prove the current monthly fuel adjustment.

Calculator scope

The calculator on this site estimates named residential energy and fixed/minimum charges. It excludes monthly adjustments, taxes, fees, arrears, credits and late-payment amounts.

Turn a high total into a precise question

Instead of reporting only “my bill is too high”, identify whether the problem is units, category, load, a particular adjustment or a missing payment. Attach the relevant bill and evidence through the official provider channel. Keep private account details out of public comments and this website’s general contact form.

Questions you may have

Can I copy the tax total from another house?

No. Another account can have a different category, balance, adjustment period or taxable basis.

Does a base estimate show the amount to pay?

No. Pay using the issued bill and supported payment channel. An estimate cannot confirm an account balance.
