ENERGY & TIMING

Peak hours: first check whether your tariff is ToU

Distinguish reducing electricity use from shifting its timing, then use a transparent worksheet to compare the energy charges.

Timing matters differently on different tariffs

A time-of-use tariff prices peak and off-peak energy separately. A non-ToU residential bill is not automatically cheaper because you ran the same appliance later. For that connection, reducing total consumption is the more direct energy-saving calculation.

Read your tariff category and registers before using a peak-time estimate. The applicable hours must come from the current official schedule for your connection and period. This guide does not assume one set of seasonal clock times is valid for every meter or agreement.

Compare a timing change

Estimate a ToU timing difference

For a matching ToU connection only. Uses the named February 2026 rates, with the same energy shifted from peak to off-peak.

Example: a constant 1,000-watt load used for one hour is 1 kWh. Moving that hour on 30 days moves 30 kWh. At a peak/off-peak rate difference of Rs. 12.32 per kWh in the named schedule, the energy-charge difference is Rs. 369.60. The actual bill can also include other charges.

A cycling appliance rarely draws its rated wattage continuously. For a more realistic estimate, use measured energy for the period. Do not switch off medical, safety or essential equipment to follow a generic timing suggestion.

Compare a reduction separately from a time shift

Different actions should not be counted as the same saving
ChangeWhat it does
Use an appliance for fewer hoursCan reduce total kWh; calculate with realistic power and usage.
Move the same kWh to another timeCan change ToU energy charges when the period changes; does not itself reduce kWh.
Improve insulation or an appliance’s efficiencyCan reduce energy needed for a task; savings depend on real usage and conditions.
Change the calculator categoryDoes not change the tariff assigned by your provider.

When comparing two months, account for weather, occupancy and the number of days between readings. A smaller bill is not enough to prove which one of several changes caused the reduction.

Make a small, useful measurement plan

  1. Record a baselineKeep the current meter readings, bill dates and the task you want to change.
  2. Change one manageable habitFor example, reduce unnecessary running time for a non-essential appliance, or shift an appropriate task outside confirmed ToU peak hours.
  3. Compare energy, then chargesLook at kWh over comparable periods first. Then check the applicable rates, fixed charges and adjustments before assigning a rupee saving.

Keep the starting appliance use, weather, occupied hours and tariff with your comparison. A saving measured in one household may not carry over to another.

Questions you may have

Does running appliances at night always reduce a bill?

Only a relevant ToU price difference makes the same kWh cheaper by timing alone. Check the actual tariff and official timing schedule.

Does the worksheet include tax savings?

No. It compares the stated energy-rate difference only; taxes, adjustments and fixed charges are excluded.
